Raising Pasture Pigs on Small Acreage

Registration is closed for this event
Are you a veteran interested in raising pigs? All Family Farm and Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County have partnered to provide you an opportunity to see how one small farm has had success raising pastured pigs. All Family Farm, located in Middletown, NY and founded in 2018 by veterans Nathan and Misty Allanach, raises and sells heritage breed Berkshire pork. Together with CCE Sullivan ag educators, they will discuss their mindset on starting their farm, pasture management, operations, and sales. Starting with an overview of how they made business choices around their acreage and the lessons they have learned, they will review two farm operational systems: the feeding silo and the loading system for hogs prior to transport. Attendees will tour the farm, explore the farm store, and learn how the farmers sell and market their products. Veterans will have the opportunity to survey the land currently in production, discuss small business decisions and strategies, learn technical methods of small-scale production, and ask questions in real time to a veteran family farm. Lunch is provided. This workshop is free, but space is limited and pre-registration is required. Participants will receive a copy of the book "Storey's Guide to Raising Pigs, 4th Edition: Care, Facilities, Management, Breeds".

Thank you for your interest in the Raising Pasture Pigs on Small Acreage program!
